Everyone keeps asking if AI will replace designers. Wrong question. AI already replaced the part of your job you were coasting on, and a lot of you were coasting.
The first draft is free now. Twenty layouts, forty headlines, a hundred images before lunch. If that was your value, your value just went to zero. Sit with that before you argue with it.

Be honest about what most design actually was. Pushing rectangles around until the screen looked like the last thing that shipped. The model does that faster, cheaper, and it never gets precious about its own work. You were not doing magic. You were doing a pattern, and patterns are exactly what a machine eats.
Here is the part nobody wants to hear. AI is a machine for producing the average, because it is trained on the average. Feed it the internet, get back the internet. So if your work already looked like everyone else’s, congratulations, you have already been automated. You just have not been told yet.
AI did not lower the bar. It exposed how low the bar already was.

Research is where it gets dangerous. Watch people lean on AI to “synthesize” their notes, then ship patterns that were never in the data. The model invents a clean story, it sounds smart, and everyone nods. That is not insight. That is a confident intern you refuse to fact check, and you are putting its guesses in front of real users.
And the real threat is not unemployment. It is sameness. Everyone prompting the same three models, shipping the same gradients and the same polite tone, then calling it a design system. We are speedrunning toward a world where every product looks identical and no one can tell you why.
AI did not lower the bar. It exposed how low the bar already was. Stop asking it to make you faster at being average. Start asking what you can do that it structurally cannot, and then go do only that.
